Blues by Title

Titular Blues 1912-1920

Scope and Definition
This chronological listing contains all known titular blues compositions published as sheet music in America from 1912 to the end of 1920.  It expands the appendix at the end of Long Lost Blues which covered only 1912-1915.  Titular blues are defined as works that were originally titled using either the formula “(The) (x) Blues” (examples: “The Memphis Blues,” “New York Tango Blues”) or the formula “I’ve got the (x) blues” (examples: “I’ve Got the Blues,” “I’ve Got the Weary Blues and Don’t Know What to Do”).  The listing shows all known versions of a composition to appear before 1921, a different version being defined as a change in one or more of the following: the title, the composer, the author, the copyright holder, the publisher, or the published status (i.e., when a work initially copyrighted in unpublished form is finally published).   Items are listed in chronological order of copyright date as recorded in the copyright archives of the Library of Congress.  Later versions of a composition are listed immediately below the initial version of the work regardless of the date the later version(s) were copyrighted.

Explanation of column headings
Column 1: © Date.  The copyright date of the composition presented according to the formula Month/Day/Year (for example, “12/4/14” means December 4 1914). When a composition was not copyrighted, the fact is footnoted, and the date given is the date of publication as accurately as can be determined.  This is usually to the nearest year, in which case the item is placed after the exactly dated entries for the year in question. An asterisk (*) placed before the date means that the version in question was unpublished.

Column 2: Title.  The full title of the composition as it appears on the Library of Congress copyright entry.  Where the work was published but not registered for copyright, the title is taken from the printed sheet music.  Where the composition is only known from recordings and/or piano rolls, the title is taken from the relevant labels, or, if it was not possible to consult these, a company catalog.

Columns 3-4: Words and Music. Column 3 indicates the lyricist(s) (if any) and column 4 the composer(s). All items originally appeared either as songs for voice and piano or as instrumentals for piano only, except where noted.  If the item is an instrumental, column 3 is blank.

Column 5: Name & Location of © Holder.  The name of the copyright holder along with his city of his location. In the case of a published work, the copyright holder is usually the publisher.  Where the two are different, the name of the copyright holder appears in column 5 and the publisher’s name and location is identified in a footnote.  When the work is published but not copyrighted, column 5 gives the name and location of the publisher.

129 This item, though not published till 1924 is included here as two piano roll recordings of the composition are listed in the 1920 Melodee Piano Roll Company catalog (one, #303343, is an arranged roll; the other, #3893, is hand-played by Edythe Baker). While it is not uncommon in this era for recordings of popular music to be made some time before the piece appeared in print, it is possible in this instance that the catalog listings are both an error, the actual work being “12th Street Rag” by Euday L. Bowman which was first published in 1914 and was frequently recorded on piano rolls in the 1910s and 1920s. This possibility is made more likely by the fact that in the catalog, the composer credit for both items is given as Bowman. Only an aural identification will clear the matter up and it has not yet been possible to locate a copy of either roll.
